FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles. 

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles. 


Your role: FMI is seeking a Quality Engineer to support all aspects of the organization including responsibility for assigned programs with close alignment to operations & supply chain. As the Quality Engineer, you will work closely with production and engineering management to develop, maintain, and implement quality standards to ensure they meet applicable customer & internal requirements. You will also partner with stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle to support investigations and drive implementation of risk mitigation activities aimed at improving the quality of products & processes.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Represent FMI quality as the point of contact to assigned customers including support of onsite & virtual meetings as well as maintaining responsibility for distribution of data & information as required
  • Coordinate FMI and supplier quality requirements to ensure proper flow down to vendors; assist in identification of supplier related issues &/or qualification of new vendors
  • Develop and utilize FMI systems to satisfy customer quality requirements including regulatory, certification, and validation systems
  • Assist in providing quality support throughout the various gates of FMI’s Contracts & Proposal process
  • Deploy both proactive & reactive quality tools & principles within the organization including execution of RCCA, PFMEAs, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Process Flow Diagrams, Manufacturing Quality Plans (MQP), APQP as required
  • Ensure proper product sampling, quality control checks, identification, and traceability are in place across the entire manufacturing value stream
  • Make recommendations & establish business cases for capital expenditures in support of enhancing the quality of products & processes
  • Utilize available data to assess the health of products, processes and quality systems
  • Assist & train inspectors on best practices in accordance with quality assurance procedures
  • Review of customer & internal drawings; report back to stakeholders on any required changes
  • Participate in the organization’s configuration management process including initiating, reviewing and dispositioning Engineering Change Orders
  • Support the FMI internal audit program in accordance with AS9100
  • Participate &/or lead various RCCA activities in support of internal/customer non-conformances
  • Participate in &/or lead Material Review Boards (MRB) meetings as quality engineering representative
  • Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
  • Support, cooperate with, and participate in company-wide Lean and Safety improvement initiatives

What we need from you:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials engineering, or closely related discipline
  • 3-5+ years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Windows Operating systems
  • Familiarity with database usage, Statistical Process Control (SPC), and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Expertise/experience in working with and meeting customers and/or suppliers requirements
  • Experience as a team leader in identifying and resolving issues
  • Good presentation skills
  • Quality Assurance practices and procedures expertise
  • Practical knowledge and experience using Lean, Six Sigma, & TQM principles
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
  • Supports, cooperates with, and participates in company-wide Lean improvement initiatives

Preferred:

  • Experience in composites manufacturing and process engineering
  • Proficiency in various machining, testing and inspection processes
  • ISO 9001/AS 9100 certification knowledge
  • ASQ Certification CQE, CQT
  • Lean or Six Sigma Green Belt (or higher) certification
