FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles. 

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles. 


Your role: As an Engineering Technician with FMI, you will be an essential member of the Optimization Team in this hands-on role. You will be a Team Player responsible for supporting plant engineering projects and our manufacturing processes, including improving existing equipment and processes in direct support of production equipment. Some examples of responsibilities for the Engineering Technician can include proposing improvement opportunities, assisting with specification and sourcing of new equipment and production hardware, conducting experiments and investigations under the guidance of Engineers, process and equipment evaluation and troubleshooting, inspection of materials, and development of manufacturing improvements. To succeed in this role, you will need to have the ability to read, interpret, create, and execute technical documentation that may include instructions, procedures, drawings, manuals, work orders, bill of materials, and travelers. You will also be able to clearly communicate and maintain documentation for projects and processes

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead by Example
  • Maintain and upgrade of electromechanical equipment
  • Participate in root cause analysis investigations as part of a team
  • Implement process improvements and contribute to Lean initiatives
  • Support engineering initiatives, manufacturing operations and development processes
  • Prepare new equipment for operation and provide support during implementation and initial production.
  • Work with maintenance team to troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Follow technical direction and communicate results
  • Follow all safety practices for handling materials and operating processes
  • Operate with a safety-first attitude & be aware of potential hazards and apply proper care and consideration
  • Some computer skills are required, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Use of various form of PPE will be required at times; cartridge respirator, goggles, visors, gloves, aprons, Tyvek suits, etc.

What we need from you:

  • Minimum GED or High School Diploma
  • Minimum 1-2 years of work experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to write basic process procedures or instructions
  • High level of mechanical aptitude
  • Strong work ethic
  • Good attention to detail
  • Works well individually and as a member of a team
  • Ability to use hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, power tools, etc.) and basic precision measurement devices
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles desired

Preferred:

  • Associates Degree in trade/industrial/engineering discipline, demonstrated progress toward a technical degree or equivalent military experience preferred
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles desired
  • Familiarity with industrial electrical and control systems preferred
  • Experience in operating and maintenance of various forms of industrial process equipment such as pressure vessels, pumps, fluid systems, ovens, cranes, lifts, robotics, etc. would be preferred
