FMI's Rhode Island facility is focused on textile engineering and manufacturing of 2D woven fabrics, 3D woven preforms, braided materials and resin transfer molded composites. We work with the stiffest, strongest, and lightest fiber in the world including carbon, glass, aramid (kevlar) and ceramic.

Our products are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as NASA's Mars Sample Return mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for US military ground vehicles.


Your role: FMI's Rhode Island facility is seeking a Project Manager to join our Woonsocket, RI based team. As the Project Manager, you will be exposed to the various engineering, manufacturing and program management disciplines that make our company “run”.  This includes textile and composite component design, machine optimization and maintenance, simple to complex tool design, fabrication and inspection of finished parts and related data entry and analysis. You should expect to spend ~50% of your time in an office environment and ~50% on the manufacturing floor.  You will be able to interact closely with internal engineering and management staff as well as our various shop operators and technicians and customers in a collaborative, problem solving type environment is also expected.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supporting contract R&D projects including responsibility for program management (i.e. schedule and budget) and project engineering (i.e. design and manufacturing) aspects
  • Designing, building and troubleshooting tools, jigs, etc. as needed to support lay-up and/or forming of near net shape, fiber based preforms
  • Working with customer solid models to design textile based composite preforms leveraging 2D and 3D woven and braided constituents
  • Working closely with our customer(s) to understand their technical requirements and drivers
  • Designing, modifying and/or troubleshooting custom, textile based machinery, as needed on a project by project basis
  • Interfacing with outside vendors including machine shops and custom machine suppliers
  • Designing 3D woven preforms
  • Programing 3D weaving looms  
  • Writing work instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)
  • Demonstrating strong organizational skills to document efforts, procedures and technical results and to communicate results effectively to customers in a team based, iterative R&D environment
  • Learning to run custom 3D weaving equipment and developing standardized processes that can be passed on to operators and technicians

What we need from you:

  • Associates Degree in an engineering or science discipline with relevant experience
  • 5+ years of experience in a composites and/or textiles manufacturing environment
  • An interest and enthusiasm to work in a project based, contract R&D environment
  • A team player with a proven track record of working closely with peers, managers and customers
  • Ability to use SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software at an intermediate to advanced scale
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and specifications
  • General mechanical knowledge and machine trouble-shooting skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelors Degree in related field
  • Familiarity with basic composite lay-up principals and best practices
  • Familiarity with custom machinery using PLC’s and servo motor
  • Familiarity with IS9001 and AS9100 quality systems
  • Experience managing others
  • Being comfortable working hands on mechanically
