FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles. 

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles. 


Your role: FMI is seeking a Front End Engineering Manager to provide leadership, technical direction and priorities to Weaving, Secondary Operation, Machining Engineers and Engineering Technicians. As the Front End Engineering Manager, your work will involve accountability for manufacturing processes, equipment and successful operational execution. Weaving, Secondary Operation, & Machining Engineers at both our Biddeford locations will report directly to the the Front End Engineering Manager. You will be working closely with the Weaving Production Manager and Sr. Engineering Manager and your work will include executing improvements in safety, quality, cost, and cycle time using Lean and Six Sigma principles. You will also coordinate and direct projects while making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities such as equipment installation, modification and material system development.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage day to day activities and priorities supporting production
  • Execute strategic and tactical plans in pursuit of business objectives
  • Support development and maintenance of operational procedures and processes
  • Support design, installation, and qualification of new equipment and equipment modifications with strong configuration management practices
  • Direct project management activities including prioritization, assigning resources, project planning, technical communication with customers
  • Collaborate with other functional groups in support of department and company initiatives
  • Support Continuous Improvement of processes and Lean activities relating to Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and Standardization
  • Coach, support, and develop employees on your team to foster effective communication, collaboration and teamwork, and execution while demonstrating and modeling core values
  • Conduct performance appraisals, set annual goals and objectives, complete regular feedback sessions, review training and development needs
  • Ensure all employees are knowledgeable of and comply with all company policies, practices, and standards
  • Ensure compliance with all Environmental Health and Safety regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Coordinate Engineering team on planning and designing manufacturing processes
  • Analyzes assembly, fabrication, machining, and other processes. Work with internal and external subject matter experts for standardization and optimization
  • Contributes to complex aspects of a project
  • Participates and sponsors Lean activities
  • Expected to maintain all housekeeping items and follow all housekeeping procedures
  • Expected to follow all safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment

What we need from you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related engineering field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment or equivalent
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with a team and independently when required
  • Leadership, employee development, training and coaching skills
  • Effective time management and prioritization focus
  • Demonstrate results in technical problem solving, product and process development and supporting customer focused programs and services
  • Ability to follow technical direction and communicate results
