FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles. 

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles. 


Your role: FMI is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Manufacturing Engineer to join our Manufacturing Engineering Team! As the Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you will support equipment optimization and improvement, mentoring process engineers, coordinating and executing technical tasks with management. In addition to new product development, this position will drive improvements in safety, quality, cost and cycle time using Lean and Six Sigma principles. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all safety procedures are followed and maintain a safe work environment
  • Be the Engineering Subject Matter Expert to drive new equipment through production.
  • Mitigate long-term product and equipment risk through improving manufacturing tools with process engineers
  • Provide technical leadership and lead by example
  • Conduct time and cost reduction analysis of equipment improvements
  • Develop and implement equipment maintenance procedures recommendations based on utilization
  • Set improvement priorities based off value stream maps and pareto data
  • Anticipate bottlenecks and mitigate constraints with technical solutions
  • Team player with all stakeholders
  • Coordinate transfer of customer requirements to production processes and related documentation
  • Maximize efficiency by analyzing layout of equipment, workflow, assembly methods and work force utilization 
  • Determine the parts, equipment, tools and processes needed to achieve manufacturing goals

What we need from you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field
  • 10+ years of manufacturing experience focusing on equipment design or improvement
  • Demonstrated experience in tool failure reduction, continuous improvement, and cycle time reduction
  • Experience with GD&T and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly
  • Experience with Failure Mode Analysis
  • Experience with AutoCAD or SolidWorks
  • Experience with project management
  • Familiarity with PFMEA and DFMEA, potential hazards and applying proper care and consideration
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook
  • Ability to learn multiple and diverse processes and procedures 
  • Mechanical Tool Design aptitude
  • Familiarity with use of hand tools and capability to support multiple processes and tasks using various equipment
